Böhme Recital Tour

This was a project in two parts.

The first was spent conducting an independent study into the life and compositions of the German composer Oskar Böhme. The trumpeter had a long career performing and teaching is Russia. The influence of his time spent playing for the ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre can be heard in his compositions which are a crossover of German and Russian writing. Böhme’s works for trumpet and for brass are written in a way that is very natural to the trumpeter which can be credited to his personal experience playing the instrument. While the composer faced challenges in his career with the tense political climate in Russia, he made it his mission to make the trumpet a more prominent solo instrument.

The second part of the project was bringing the music to life. A program was constructed using three of Böhme’s solo trumpet works with keyboard and paired with his brass sextet.Dasa invited some of her finest colleagues to collaborate on preparing the selections for performance. With financial support from the province of British Columbia, the program was taken on tour to Vancouver Island where it was performed at the beautiful Lutheran Church of the Cross. The group then concluded the project with a final performance in Roy Barnett Recital Hall at the University of British Columbia.

The musicians involved in the Böhme project were:
(pictured left to right)

Matheus Moraes - Trumpet
Devon Atkinson - Trombone
Silas Friesen - Trumpet
Carter Johnson - Piano
Dasa Silhova - Trumpet
Devon Throness - Bass Trombone
Nick Bartlett - French Horn

Without their hard work this project would not have been possible!

Unfortunately the project was not recorded, however the musician’s did receive cell phone footage from an audience member after the Vancouver performance. In this video you can hear them perform the third movement from Böhme’s sextet for brass.

“If they cut off both hands, I will compose music anyway, holding the pen in my teeth.”
